A dramatic black and white landscape of Roseberry Topping in North Yorkshire, with a lone tree silhouetted against the setting sun.

There was something about this scene that immediately caught my attention. The shape of the lone tree creates a strong focal point against the sweeping landscape, while the path draws the eye towards Roseberry Topping beyond.

But it was the light that made this moment particularly special. As the sun slipped towards the horizon, its rays streamed through the branches and across the landscape, while the grasses in the foreground caught the backlight and seemed to shimmer.

I chose to present the image in black and white to emphasise the drama of the light, the texture of the landscape and the sculptural form of the tree.

This photograph was Highly Commended in the Black and White category of Landscape Photographer of the Year 2022.
